Overly Colorful Superheroes Part 2

Apparently if a post is too long or too heavy you can’t post anymore (it just doesn’t show up!). So, here is the second part to my Ranger analysis.

Engine Sentai Go-onger/Power Rangers: RPM

Engine Sentai Go-onger/Power Rangers: RPM

Engine Sentai Go-onger (炎神戦隊ゴーオンジャー) Engine Squadron Go-onger
Machine World (マシンワールド Mashin Wārudo) is one of the 11 Braneworlds (ブレーンワールド Burēnwārudo) other than our own, which is referred as the Human World (ヒューマンワールド Hyūman Wārudo), and it is home to giant vehicular beings called Engines who wage a war against the Gaiark who desire to pollute their world. Losing, Gaiark’s three Pollution Ministers’ escape leaves them on Earth, seeing the Human World as an easier location to create their ideal paradise. The six Engines manage to pursue them, selecting five humans to become their partners, the Go-ongers. The team are joined by Go-on Wings and their Wing Engines, as well as the Ancient Engines, as they all together battle the Gaiark as well as other evil villains from other Braneworlds.

Power Rangers : RPM
Three years prior to the series’ beginning, an AI computer virus called Venjix took over all of the Earth’s computers, rendering all communication useless while creating an army of robot droids to destroy everything. Humanity’s last safe haven became the domed city of Corinth. Surrounded by Venjix’s forces and a force field, it is nearly impossible to enter without luck or firepower. When the force field is lowered to allow surviving humans sanctuary, Dr. K’s RPM Power Rangers fight Venjix’s forces to protect Corinth from being destroyed. It has been rurmored that this will be the last series of the Power Rangers run. I would be sad to see the saga end though.

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger/Power Rangers ???

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger/Power Rangers ???

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (侍戦隊シンケンジャー) Samurai Squadron Shinkenger
For 18 generations, samurai of the Shiba House (志葉家 Shiba Ke?) have suppressed the evil intentions of the Gedoushu, malevolent spirits that enter the world of the living from gaps between buildings and other structures. Now, the youngest head of the Shiba Clan must gather his four vassals (家臣 kashin?) in order to battle the Gedoushu as the Shinkengers. Once becoming a Shinkenger, they must renounce their past lives in order to keep their friends and family safe in case a member of the Gedoushu targets them. This is the newest of the Super Sentai series that just started showing in February of this year. My favorite part of the program is that the characters write kanji in their attacks.

Now, it is really hard to say which version was better done because the target audience are different between the two countries (and I mean the difference in how Japanese and American children think). However, I will admit that even now I do enjoy watching these superhero shows, but I cannot stand watching the American remakes – at least not the recently done ones. This is not because I am being biased and just want to lean towards everything Japanese. I actually like what they did with the first half of the Power Rangers saga because they were trying to create a timeline and all the events were related somehow. However…poor script writing got in the way here and things have just become worse and worse.

For the most part, I can watch the Japanese Super Sentai series and find something enjoyable and something that I genuinely find interested and that draws me in. In the American remakes, I feel that the story line is really dumbed down and everything is too childish. It is almost like they want to make the parents who children force them to watch TV with them suffer through 30 minutes of bad teenager acting. Just think a really bad soap opera for kids. This is not to say that the Japanese actors are any better (really, they are just as bad), but the Super Sentai’s saving grace is the story lines. They are more complicated and tend to include much deeper themes and morals than in Power Rangers. Because of this, the shows become a little more watchable for adults.

Both shows have their pluses. For example, I like how the American version tried to make a fluid story line with all characters and stories intertwining. In that way, it makes you want to keep watching to see how the current show relates (even if it is only something small) instead of all the stories being completely different. In the Japanese versions, I like how the themes are more prominent and it is clear that each series is trying to teach children about how they view themselves, how they view others, and how they view the world. So, I guess if you made me choose between the two, I would pick the original Japanese versions over the American remakes. Despite that opinion, I will still always have a warm place in my heart for Might Morphin Power Rangers (Go! Go!).

I should probably do a post sometime about the differences in Japanese and American animations, but I think I have proven myself enough of a nerd for today.

If you are interested in looking at each series individually or seeing how the characters have changed between the American and Japanese versions, I recommend the following sites (they are worth a look): Super Sentai Time Capsule & Power Rangers Central

Overly Colorful Superheroes

I was planning on having another translation from 夜回り先生 today, but between waking up at 3 am to watch the Barcelona vs. Manchester United match, dreading the thought of having to bike to work in the rain, and just all the usual hustle that comes with being too sleepy while getting ready, I managed to leave the kanji software for my DS at the apartment. Sure I could still read some of it and bother a junior high school teacher every time there was a word I could not read or did not know the meaning, but I think I would have gotten in the way more than just sitting at my desk reading an English book.

By the way, the soccer game was great, but a little disheartening. Before the 3:30 kick-off, I had also watched the Japan vs. Chile match and was totally floored by it. Let’s be honest folks, when you think of the Japanese national team (for soccer) the image of scoring goals is heavily outweighed by the image of chasing after the soccer ball and being through around by more muscular men. Last night’s match yielded a 4 – 0 win for Japan – they totally wiped the floor with Chile. Now I wish they would keep that energy for matches that really mean something…

The Man U. vs Barcelona match was also a little surprising because I think most people were expecting Man U. to win. After the kick-off, they essentially had 90% of the ball control with more than a dozen golden opportunities to score a goal – Cristiano Ronaldo was giving me heart attack after heart attack because of all the amazing shots that manage to not find the back of the net. Despite a valid effort, no less than 10 minutes into the match Barcelona scored its first goal with an amazing header goal in the second. Yeah…Man U. totally got it handed too them – their defense was driving me crazy the entire match. As Ronaldo put it himself,

“Everything went wrong. We started well in the game but after we didn’t do nothing. We didn’t control the game and we lost. I think Barcelona played better than us and they deserved to win. Everyone expects Manchester to do something in the game and it didn’t happen. (We) didn’t play fantastic, (we) didn’t control the game, we didn’t do the right thing, we lost goals and that’s what’s happened tonight.”

(source).

I am a Man U. fan, but even if you are a die-hard fan you have to admit that the final match was not theirs to win. Barcelona totally deserved the win and they played a much smarter and much cleaner game. Better luck next time guys.

But, my purpose for writing is not so much about soccer (although I could probably go one and on and on about it) but rather about children’s television. To be more specific: children’s live action super hero television. I bet there are very few American adults who have not heard the “Go go Power Rangers!” theme song – hey, I bet some of you reading this were fans yourself. I, for one, was addicted to the original series when I was a child. Hated the Pink Ranger. Loved the Yellow Ranger. Had a crazy crush on the Red Ranger. Secretly searched dumpsters in hopes that I too would find Rita Repulsa and then Zordon would give me powers so I could summon an awesome mecha ride. Oh yeah, I dream big.

Now, this might come as a surprise for some of you (it was for me), but this beloved Power Rangers saga actually came from Japan. While for the most part the story line has been changed, costumes, props, and fight scenes are all taken from the Super Sentai Series (スーパー戦隊シリーズ Sūpā Sentai Shirīzu) which is a series of team superhero genre shows produced by Toei Company Ltd., Toei Agency and Bandai, and aired by TV Asahi (“Super” refers to their use of mecha, and “sentai” is the Japanese word for “task force” or, literally, “fighting squadron” and was also a term used for Japanese squadrons in WWII). See mom, I have always loved things Japanese since I was little (more specifically since I was in the second grade)!

The original Power Rangers story (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) that aired from 1993 to 1995 was actually a combination of three Super Sentai series (Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger (恐竜戦隊ジュウレンジャー), Gosei Sentai Dairanger (五星戦隊ダイレンジャー), and Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (忍者戦隊カクレンジャー) respectively) which all aired in the early 1990’s on Japanese television just like its American counterpart. Japan started airing these types of shows as early as 1975 with Himitsu Sentai Goranger (秘密戦隊ゴレンジャー) – this translates to Secret Squadron Five Rangers and had 15 other productions under its belt before America starting producing Power Rangers.

Check out those costumes...

The following long lists of shows and pictures are meant to be a comparison between the American and Japanese versions. Most of the information below is taken from Wikipedia – I am not THAT much of a nerd!

Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger (Dinosaur Squadron Beast Rangers)
Bandora the witch started a war on the dinosaurs due to the death of her son. After she caused much devastation, the Guardian Beasts sealed her and her minions on the planet Nemesis. Five members of each of the ancient human tribes were cryogenically frozen to combat the witch when she escaped from her imprisonment. Later in the series, the leader’s elder brother the Dragon Ranger was released accidentally and fought against them because of jealousy and vengeance even though his life was limited.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
The series takes place in the fictional town of Angel Grove, California. On a drifting planetoid, two unwitting astronauts discover an extraterrestrial container (referred to as a dumpster as a result of its stench) and breach the unit, inadvertently releasing the evil alien witch Rita Repulsa from 10,000 years of confinement. Upon her release, she and her army of evil Space Aliens set their sights on conquering the nearest planet: Earth. When the wise sage Zordon becomes aware of the release of the evil witch he was responsible for capturing so long ago, he orders his robotic assistant Alpha 5 to find five “teenagers with attitude” to defend the Earth from Rita’s attacks.

Gosei Sentai Dairanger

Gosei Sentai Dairanger

Gosei Sentai Dairanger (五星戦隊ダイレンジャー) Five-Star Squadron Dairanger
Over 8,000 years ago, the Daos civilization flourished in Southern China. The Daos Empire consisted of three tribes: the Dai, the Shura (ancestors of today’s humanity), and the Gorma (the military tribe), who lived harmoniously. However, one day the Gorma Tribe decided to take over the empire and the world. Thus began the war between the Gorma and Dai tribes. The battle continued for 5,000 years, led by the Gorma Triumvirate. The Mythical Qi Beasts appeared to oppose the Gorma, whose magical powers had increased to the point where they could turn themselves into monsters. Five Dai warriors’ Qi powers had increased to the point where they could control the Mythical Qi Beasts. The war ended with the disappearance of both the Dai and Gorma tribes. In 1993, the Gorma Tribe, one of the Daos’ two missing branches, revived to take over the world. To counter them, Master Kaku assembled a team of five youths with high levels of Qi. They became the Dairangers of the present time.

Go~Whi~te Ra~ger~GO!GO!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (season 2)
Following multiple defeats, Rita’s fortress is invaded by her superior, Lord Zedd. Disgusted with her failure, he takes over and discards Rita back into space in another Space Dumpster. Then, he launches his own campaign against the Power Rangers focusing on turning living things into monsters in order to waver the Ranger’s ability to destroy them. As Zedd focuses his attacks on the Green Ranger, the other Rangers see an upgrade to their Zords. They are able to transform into mythical beasts known as the Thunderzords and can form a more powerful Zord combination, the Thunder Megazord. Eventually, Tommy loses his Green Ranger powers for good and leaves the group, but soon after, Zordon and Alpha choose Tommy to become the new White Ranger. This series also marked the departure of Trini, Jason, and Zack where Zordon forced them to leave the team with some peace conference crap – I refused to watch the show after this and cried under the table for three days. Trini was my favorite.

Ninja Sentai Kakuranger

Ninja Sentai Kakuranger

Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (忍者戦隊カクレンジャー) Ninja Squadron Hidden Ranger
Four hundred years ago, the ninja and the Youkai had a great war. The legendary Sarutobi Sasuke and other four ninja sealed the Youkai Commander Nurarihyon and all his Youkai’s energies away in a cave protected by the “Seal Door”. In the present, the only surviving Youkai, Kappa, tricks Sarutobi Sasuke and Kirigakure Saizo’s descendants, Saizou and Sasuke, into releasing the Youkai by opening the “Seal Door”. Now these two, joined by three other descendants of great ninja, become the Kakuranger to fight the Youkai with the aid of the Sanshinshou.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (season 3)
Rito Revolto, Rita’s skeletal brother, later comes to Earth and, with the help from a group of monsters, manages to destroy the Rangers’ Thunderzords. Consequently, the original Dinozords are destroyed too and the Power Coins are damaged beyond repair. Undaunted, they seek the aid of Ninjor, alleged creator of the Power Coins, who gives them new Ninja Coins and the even more powerful Ninjazords. There was also a mini-series created called Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers where the Power Rangers are turned into children by Master Vile, and Zordon recruits five alien Power Rangers from the planet Aquitar, humanoids that feed on water and have watery voices, to help protect the Earth from Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa. Meanwhile, the kids seek to find the pieces of the Zeo Crystal to return them to their full adult form.

Chouriki Sentai Ohranger/Power Rangers: Zeo

Chouriki Sentai Ohranger/Power Rangers: Zeo

Chouriki Sentai Ohranger (超力戦隊オーレンジャー) Super-Powered Squadron Ohranger
Six hundred million years ago, Pangaea created a robot named Bacchus Wrath, who turned on his creators. The King Ranger defeated Bacchus Wrath and banished him from Earth. In the year 1999, Bacchus returned to Earth as the ruler of the Baranoia Empire, with the intention of wiping out all human life and bring about machine rule. Chief Counsellor Miura revived super energies that had been born of the lost civilization of Pangaea. With the assembling of pieces of a stone plate uncovered three years previously, the secrets of “Super Power” were revealed. Miura built a pyramid to generate Tetrahedron power in order to allow five UAOH officers to transform into OHRangers. Due to the events that occurred in Japan around the time the series was aired, like the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway, Ohranger received much altering to its intended themes, making it the least-popular Sentai show to date.

Power Rangers: Zeo
In the series, after recovering from the destruction of the Command Center, the Rangers discovered the Zeo Crystal intact in the rubble. The Zeo Crystal guided them to a portal, which took them deep underground, where Zordon and Alpha 5 had survived by hiding in the heretofore unmentioned Power Chamber. At this time, a new set of villains called the Machine Empire decided to take control of the Earth. They chased Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd away from the moon, and Rito and Goldar were left on Earth, with no memories of their past. The Rangers become the Zeo Rangers, empowered by the Zeo Crystal.

He empowers the five with the “Kurumagic” power of the five legendary car constellations, transforming them into Carrangers. As Carrangers, the five battle an alien reckless driver gang and prevent them from destroying Earth.

Power Rangers: Turbo
After the defeat of Maligore, the older Turbo Rangers graduate from high school and resume their normal lives, but are attacked once again by a vengeful Divatox and her forces and an endless supply of detonators and monsters that threaten the citizens of Angel Grove.A new twist into the story involves Zordon and Alpha 5 returning to Zordon’s home planet of Eltar, thereby relinquishing the mentorship of the Rangers to the spectral Dimitria of Inquiris (who is suggested to be Divatox’s long-lost twin sister) and the street-talking Alpha 6.The Rangers are then joined by Blue Senturion, an intergalactic police robot who brings with him the “Millennium Message,” a pivotal story arc which foretells the later events of Power Rangers in Space.

Soon after a small tour of the INET HQ, the building comes under attack by the evil Neijirejia, an evil force lead by Dr. Hinelar, to conquer this reality. Dr. Kubota, INET’s chief, reveals that Megaranger was not a video game, but a combat simulator to find recruits for a super fighting team against the Neijirejia. While the INET HQ is ravaged and Neijirejia warrior Yugande destroys the base, Kubota gives Kenta and his friends special devices known as ‘Digitizers’. By entering the key-code “3-3-5″ and shouting “Install, Megaranger!”, Date, Imamura, Namiki, Endou and Jougasaki become the fighting team known as Denji Sentai Megaranger.

Power Rangers in Space
When the Turbo Rangers lose their Megazords, and have their Power Chamber destroyed by Divatox and her army of Pirahnatrons, they leave for space, in search of the original team’s old mentor, Zordon. The Starbeasts and the first Gingaman, warriors of the Ginga forest, fought them with the mystical power called Earth and eventually were able to imprison them. Hyuuga, Hayate, Gouki, Hikaru and Saya are chosen as the 133rd warriors of the Star Beast Swords. Ryouma is very happy that his elder brother Hyuuga succeeds to the honorable title. When Elder Ohghi holds the succession ceremony of Star Beast Swords, an earthquake breaks the seal of Barban. Ohghi orders the 133rd warriors to get the GingaBraces hidden in Roaring Mountain. However, the Barban attacks them to prevent the birth of the new Gingamen. During the battle, Hyuuga got swallowed into a crack in the ground which Captain Zahab of the Barban created. Enraged, Ryouma activates his hidden Earth power and awaken the Ginga Braces. The Gingaman fights together with the Starbeasts against the Barban, who desire to revive the Demon Beast, Daitanix, on whose ‘corpse’ they built their castle.

Power Rangers : Lost Galaxy
In the fictional universe of Lost Galaxy, five young adults from the space colony Terra Venture are seeking a new world like Earth. They later meet a jungle girl named Maya, who leads them to the five mystical swords known as the Quasar Sabers, on her home planet of Mirinoi. After pulling the sabers out of a stone, one of the teens, Mike Corbett, falls into a crevasse, but not before passing his saber onto his younger brother Leo Corbett. With the Quasar Sabers, the teens transform into the Galaxy Power Rangers, and use them to battle space villains from two different parts of the galaxy. These villains include Scorpius, Trakeena, Deviot, and Captain Mutiny. Along the way, they discover several zords known as Galactabeasts, and make an ally in the form of the mysterious Magna Defender, a galactic warrior who later dies, but not before revealing his host body is Mike Corbett, and passes the Magna Defender powers to him. When Deviot revives the evil Psycho Rangers, the Rangers of Power Rangers in Space show up to aid the Galaxy Rangers in destroying them. During this saga, Kendrix Morgan, the Pink Ranger, sacrifices herself to protect the Pink Space Ranger and Terra Venture from Psycho Pink. Karone, sister of the Red Space Ranger and former evil princess Astronema, is given the powers of the Pink Galaxy Ranger from Kendrix, who appears as a spirit, and joins the remaining 5 rangers in the battle to protect Terra Venture. The Lost Galaxy season serves as something of a transitional series and also a unique one in Power Rangers history: it is neither completely self-contained nor a direct continuation; it’s a bit of both.

Five members of the Tatsumi Family are the five main heroes of the series.

Each of the four civilians chosen had a special area of expertise: Carter Grayson, the Red Lightspeed Ranger, was a fire fighter in the local fire department; Chad Lee, the Blue Lightspeed Ranger, worked as a lifeguard and marine animal trainer at a local marine amusement park; Joel Rawlings, the Green Lightspeed Ranger, was a stunt pilot; Kelsey Winslow, the Yellow Lightspeed Ranger, was an extreme sports athlete; Dana Mitchell, the Captain’s daughter, who agreed to become the Pink Lightspeed Ranger, was a nurse and practiced medical arts. The five Power Rangers were aided by a team of scientists and engineers led by Miss Angela Fairweather, and operated out of the Lightspeed Aquabase, an underwater military compound that also deters the hydrophobic demons from directly attacking the base.

There, they meet Wesley Collins, who is the son of a rich industrialist and looks identical to Alex. The Animarium is an island that floats in the sky. It is shaped like a turtle and is the home of the Wild Zords and the Princess Shayla, the Rangers’ mentor. (It is unclear how the Rangers travel between the Animarium and the Earth surface, but in one of the last episodes Merrick and Kite are teleported onto the Animarium, so presumably they used the same teleportation throughout the rest of the series.) The Power Rangers use their powers to defeat the forces of the Orgs, led by one Master Org.

Bakuryū Sentai Abaranger/Power Rangers: Dino Thunder

Bakuryū Sentai Abaranger (爆竜戦隊アバレンジャー) Burstosaur Squadron Abaranger
Scientists believe that 65,000,000 years ago, a meteorite’s crash on Earth killed off the dinosaurs, but in truth, it split Earth into two parallel universes: The Earth we know is referred to as “Another-Earth” by the residents of the Earth where dinosaurs were still the superior species, Dino Earth. Overtime, the Dragonoid and Burstosaur races came into being on Dino Earth but were at war with the Evoliens, enities that emerged from the meteor. The two Earths are separate until Asuka, a Dragonoid from Dino Earth, arrives on Earth via a transdimensional portal. However, he is followed by the Evoliens in their Anamolicarus spaceship and the three Burstosaurs under their control. As the Burstosaurs Tyrannosaurus, Ptreranodon, and Triceratops attack Tokyo, a call is sent out to three destined ones who possess Dino Guts to gain the powers to tame the three beasts. Together with their Burstosaur partners, the three become Abarangers to protect their dimension from the Evoliens. Mahou Sentai Magiranger/Power Rangers: Mystic Force

Mahou Sentai Magiranger/Power Rangers: Mystic Force

Mahou Sentai Magiranger (魔法戦隊マジレンジャー) Magic Squadron Magiranger
A war between the Infershia and Magitopia had occurred unbeknownst to humans. After being imprisoned within the earth for fifteen years, the Infershia have returned to get revenge from their imprisonment. When the Infershia attack, five siblings witness their mother change in front of them and she hands them MagiPhones to transform into a magic team. Now endowed with magic powers, these five vow to live up to their family’s legacy. They have yet to discover many more family secrets. This is my favorite season. Its theme was magic and elemental powers with a motif of mythological creatures linked to those elemental powers. It is the first Super Sentai to feature a full family fighting together, with two married couples and an all-sibling core team. The theme of Magiranger is courage and family. I HATE what Disney did to it.

Power Rangers : Mystic Force
Twenty years ago, in a magic-filled dimension parallel to our own, the forces of darkness came into power and a war called the “Great Battle” began. An army of the undead, led by a powerful warrior, swarmed into the land with their sights set on taking over the magical realm, the human realm and beyond, but they would have to combat a legion of brave and powerful wizards. The Mystics battled valiantly against overwhelming odds until they drove the evil back from the edge of the human world. The strongest wizard of all, Leanbow, cast a spell and sent the evil warriors into the Underworld, having the Gatekeeper seal the gates for all eternity. The forces of truth successfully thwarted the dark forces’ attempt to take the surface world, but they lost Leanbow, as he made sure the evil forces did not escape by sealing himself on their side of the Gate. The human world would never know of the Great Battle, nor of the sacrifices made to spare their lives from destruction. Even to this day they live in peace and tranquility, totally unaware of what is about to awaken. The city of Briarwood was struck by an earthquake, which was just enough to crack the seal, allowing evil to renew its attempt to invade the human world. The sorceress Udonna, realizing that the forces of evil had returned, sought out the warriors of legend, five teens living in Briarwood, to become the Power Rangers alongside her. While one of the teens was reluctant at first, he realized his destiny and joined the others in the fight against the Master of the Underworld and his numerous minions. I HATE HATE HATE this adaptation…

GoGo Sentai Boukenger (轟轟戦隊ボウケンジャー) Rumbling Squadron Boukenger
Powerful relics known as Precious have started to appear throughout the world. However, the various Negative Syndicates wish to take the Precious for themselves and utilize them for evil means. To make sure that the Precious do not fall into the hands of the Negative Syndicates, the Search Guard Successor Foundation has developed its own special operations team, the Boukengers, to do battle and collect some of the more dangerous Precious. I know, it sounds like Gollum wrote this series. They are always looking for “the Precious.”

Power Rangers : Operation Overdrive
Five brave, skilled, and adventurous young people are chosen to search for several magical jewels that were long ago taken from the Corona Aurora (literally “Crown of the Dawn”), so as to prevent them from coming into the possession of Moltor and Flurious, who are brothers banished long ago by the Corona’s guardian for having attempted to steal it. When the billionaire explorer Andrew Hartford discovered the Corona Aurora, they escaped their exile and rallied their allies. In response, Andrew Hartford selected the talented youths and modified their DNA so as to grant them exceptional physical powers by which to combat the evil. Although Moltor and Flurious initially attempted to work together, they soon became rivals. The Corona Aurora fell into Moltor’s hands; yet without its jewels, it could not grant the owner universal power. Later, the evil warriors Kamdor and Miratrix began hunting for the jewels, as did the extraterrestrial ‘Fearcats’. Now the Rangers, joined by a Mercurian named Tyzonn who joined their ranks as the Mercury Ranger, are forced to fight multiple villains and travel worldwide in the effort to capture the jewels before their enemies can.

Juken Sentai Gekiranger (獣拳戦隊ゲキレンジャー) Beast-Fist Squadron Gekiranger
Four thousand years ago, in China, a form of Kenpō martial arts called the Beast-Fist (獣拳 Jūken?) style was developed. It was created by a man named Brusa Ee, who built the hidden Beast Origin Village (獣源郷 Jūgenkyō?). Beast-Fist is a martial art in which one mimics the abilities of animals as well as reach spiritual peace. However, dissent grew among the creator’s ten students. Three believed that they should use the suffering and hatred harnessed within humans to increase their power, using their power to assume their monstrous forms, the Three Fist Demons. After Brusa Ee was murdered, the Fist Demons gathered followers to practice an evil form of the Beast-Fist style known as Confrontation Beast-Fist Akugata. The other seven students believed that true strength should come from within, engaging their former friends in a great war, ending the fight with a forbidden technique to seal the Fist Demons’ powers at the cost of losing their own human forms in the process, becoming the Seven Fist Sages. Followers of the Fist Sages created the Fierce Beast-Fist Beast Arts school: the Beast-Fist of justice whose sport discipline enhances the human body with the self-produced positive Qi called “Fierce Ki.” It is taught by Grand Master Sha-Fu, one of the seven Fist Sages, using a sports goods company named “SCRTC” as a front. By present time, a fallen student from the Fierce Beast-Fist school named Rio turns to the Confrontation Beast Fist-style, rebuilding the Confrontation Beast Hall and bring the long-dead Confrontation Beast-Fist users back to life as kyonshi to collect Confrontation Ki, Fierce Ki’s polar opposite Qi, in order to resurrect the Three Fist Demons so that through them, he can become stronger. To fight the new Confrontation Beast Hall, Sha-Fu had been training two youths: Ran Uzaki and Retsu Fukami. Along with Jan Kandou, a feral boy raised by tigers in the woods near the hidden village, the Gekiranger team is formed and later joined by two other Fierce Beast users to save the world from the Akugata’s ambitions. However, an even greater evil is using the two sides for its own agenda.

Power Rangers : Jungle Fury
Many centuries ago, an evil spirit, Dai Shi, roamed freely across the Earth, waging a “Beast War” against the humans. Fortunately, through valiant fighting, the Order of the Claw, a group of kung fu martial artists, part of the Pai Zhua (Chinese: 派爪, Pài Zhuǎ), were able to conquer the evil spirit and have since been able to keep him locked away. The secret of their prisoner and their duty to keep him under control was passed along from generation to generation of Pai Zhua members, three of which charged with keeping Dai Shi from being released. Now, in the present day, Dai Shi has escaped and three new warriors have been selected by the Pai Zhua to find and destroy the evil Dai Shi (who has possessed a former of one of the initial four warriors). The three teen warriors must go to where Dai Shi’s ancient palace is located, a land once uninhabited, now known as Ocean Bluff. In their new home, the teen warriors must assume normal lives by working at a pizza parlor under the guidance of their boss and new Pai Zhua master, R.J., who gives them the power to morph into the Power Rangers.
